Hyaluronic Acid 101

Hyaluronic Acid 101 - Amala

Hyaluronic Acid 101

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body, known for its ability to retain moisture. It comes in different molecular weights, each offering distinct benefits for skin care and medical treatments. Understanding these differences can help you become more educated and informed when selecting a Hyaluronic Acid serum for your skincare ritual.

Here are the key differences between high molecular weight (HMW) and low molecular weight (LMW) hyaluronic acid:

1. Molecular Size and Penetration

  • High Molecular Weight (HMW) HA:
    • Larger molecules that cannot penetrate as deeply into the skin.
    • Forms a protective, hydrating barrier on the skin's surface, locking in moisture and providing immediate hydration.
    • Beneficial for soothing and protecting the skin's outer layer.
  • Low Molecular Weight (LMW) HA:
    • Smaller molecules that can penetrate deeper into the skin.
    • Provides hydration at deeper layers, supporting long-term hydration and improving skin elasticity from within.
    • Can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping the skin from the inside.

2. Hydration and Moisture Retention

  • HMW HA:
    • Excellent at drawing moisture from the environment to the surface of the skin, but the hydration effect is more superficial.
  • LMW HA:
    • Can hold moisture within deeper layers of the skin, which provides a more sustained hydrating effect over time.

3. Anti-Inflammatory and Healing Properties

  • HMW HA:
    • More effective in soothing and calming irritated or sensitive skin, as it acts primarily on the skin’s surface.
    • Often used in post-procedure treatments (like chemical peels) for its calming effects.
  • LMW HA:
    • May stimulate skin repair at deeper levels, promoting collagen production and wound healing.
    • Can have anti-aging benefits by improving skin firmness and reducing wrinkles.

4. Skin Sensitivity

  • HMW HA:
    • Generally less irritating and more suitable for sensitive skin because it stays on the surface.
  • LMW HA:
    • Can sometimes cause irritation in very sensitive skin types, especially if used in high concentrations, as it penetrates deeper.

5. Durability of Effects

  • HMW HA:
    • Provides an immediate but temporary plumping and hydrating effect.
  • LMW HA:
    • Delivers longer-lasting hydration and anti-aging benefits due to its deeper action.

6. Cost

  • LMW HA:
    • Typically more expensive because of the additional processing required to break down the molecules.

When formulating our Skin Plumping Hyaluronic Serum, we chose to use a combination of both HMW and LMW Hyaluronic Acid to provide multi-layered hydration and maximize the benefits for your skin. Not only do you see an immediate hydration boost, but lasting moisture to help skin remain supple and glowing.
