    Understanding Your Skin’s Microbiome

    Understanding Your Skin’s Microbiome - Amala

    Did you know that only 44% of your skin is human cells?

    We’re all familiar with the gut microbiome, but a similar population of bacteria exists on our skin. ‘Bacteria’ may have a negative connotation, but what if it is the secret to better skin? Researchers discovered that human skin is more than a collection of human cells, but rather a symbiotic organism composed of bacterial, viral, and fungal cells:

    1 billion bugs
    1,000 unique bacterial species
    80 different fungi species

    44% Human cells, 56% Bacteria

    THE SKIN MICROBIOME
    Our skin has a protective layer called the microbiome, and just like fingerprints and DNA, no two skin microbiomes are the same. The microbiome is a diverse community of bacteria, fungi and viruses that inhabit the skin’s surface. So what is it actually made of?

    NATIVE MICROFLORA
    Native microflora, or "residents," are the stable, permanent microbes on our skin, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and mites. They maintain skin health by fortifying its natural barrier, aiding in hydration and balancing pH levels.

    TRANSIENT MICROFLORA
    Transient microflora, known as "tourists," are temporary visitors to our skin, coming from various environmental sources. Their presence is short-lived and fluctuates with factors like hygiene and lifestyle.

    Is My Microbiome Balanced?

    A healthy skin microbiome is crucial to healthy, balanced skin. When the microbiome is damaged or unbalanced, skin problems appear. Common concerns include but are not limited to: redness, rosacea, acne, hyperpigmentation, dryness, excess oil and skin sensitivities.

    Biotics = Balance

    While there is no “quick fix” or “magical solution” to correcting skin concerns, a great place to start is looking at the ingredients you’re putting on your skin.

    At Amala, we formulate with biotic infusions and whole plant and seed oils. Fermented skincare helps balance the skin’s microbiome by increasing good bacteria, which improves many of the skin concerns mentioned above.
